This is why when at work, you should only do just enough to get by. Donât misinterpret this to mean that you should become careless or lazy. Because your hard work will not be rewarded, and lets face it, we go to work for one reason and one reason only: to pay our bills. As a result, the Millennials were turned into a generation of latchkey kids who were raised on MTV and babysat by television and video games, while mom and dad slaved away for âthe manâ putting in extra hours and missing out on the precious moments of their childrenâs young lives. Do we really want to continue this social norm? Is this really the new normal? One thing thatâs important to understand about âdoing just enough to get by,â is that itâs not about being spiteful. In this day and age, you donât achieve success in your career by being the last guy/girl standing. I tried countless times to just set boundaries or take a lunch, but taking breaks or trying to delegate just added stress, because I was always adding on more work to compensate. I craved the feeling of being seen as the hardest-working and most-knowledgeable in the office as a type of acceptance and security. And so, I learned the first step to changing my habits was to change my value proposition. Repeat after me You are not your job. Try to find other areas in your life where you can channel some of your Type A or go-getter tendencies to help balance out your commitments and help build areas of your self-identity that have nothing to do with work.Step 2 Start Saying NoMost cases of office martyrdom Ive seen (myself included) arent a result of bosses or teammates piling on too much work.
